Robert was born in Hutton Rudby in 1899 to John George Garbutt aged 41, a local butcher and his wife Elizabeth Ann aged 34. The Garbutt family were farmers at Town End Farm and even have a Lane named after them. In 1901 John George and Elizabeth Ann they lived in Mill Hill House with daughters Jane then aged 14, Ethel aged 12, Martha aged 8, kate aged 6 and their sons John George aged 10,and Robert aged 2. At the time of teh census they had a visitor Jane G Featherstone a dressmaker aged 19, a servant Agnus A Pike aged 19 and a groom Samuel Coppin aged 15. The family must have been wealthy because they had a 10 room house called Elwick House built for them in the West End of Hutton Rudby and by 1911 they had been joined by Berwick aged 9, Harold Robinson aged 6 William Edward aged 4 and Monica aged 3. John George also owned a number of red brick houses in Elwick Terrace at the North End built in 1905. Therefore the family was wealthy enough to have sent their sons to Yarm Grammer School.

Robert Garbutt is the only person from the family named on the board at Conyers. John George married Florence May Darby in 1915 and would have been 23 at the outbreak of war. Berwick would have been 17 at the end of the war, and therefore Robert was the only son of the right age for service. The CWGC register indicates that he served as Robert Garbutt Sherwood. The Sherwood name traces back to Robert's grandparents.
In 1858 Robert Garbutt married Jane Sherwood.When their son, Robert's father John George married Elizabeth Ann Robinson in 1886 he is recorded as John George Sherwood. and not John George Garbutt in teh register. When he was registered, Robert was recorded as Robert Garbutt Sherwood and his brother was recorded as John George Garbutt Sherwood when he married in 1915. The use of Garbutt Sherwood appears to come and go in the records. However, Pte Robert Garbutt is remembered on the Hutton Rudby war memorial. He was killed in Action on 3rd August 1918.
